I have been out of town quite a bit in the last month and not as close to the club as I usually am. Unfortunately, our new member recruitment program has not given us the results I expected. As of this writing, we only have ten new members signed up. That means that we won't have the additional revenues we need to make many of the improvements in the club we want to make. I have talked with John Reyhons about how we can reduce our spending without significantly impacting our members enjoyment of the club. He has discussed cost reductions with the management team. Triming costs will be difficult, but necessary.
As you all know, our golf practice area is an area where we really need improvement. The Greens Committee has organized a fund raising tournament called “Home and the Range”. It will be held on September 17th. The cost will be $70 per member and $85 per guest. All the proceeds will be invested in improving the golf practice area. The significant improvement to the driving range will be to expend the grass hitting area so we are not on the mat as often. The initial response to the tournament has been excellent. If you haven’t done so already, please contact the pro shop to sign up.

Congratulations to Andy Trinkino, our Golf Course Superintendent, along with the help of our Greens Committee, for attaining the Audubon International Certification designation for Fountaingrove Golf & Athletic Club. This has been a very lengthy process and I am very proud of Andy for working so tirelessly for this achievement.
The Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, endorsed by the United States Golf Association, provides information and guidance to help golf courses preserve and enhance wildlife habitat, and protect natural resources. Golf courses from the United States, Africa, Australia, Canada, Central America, Europe, and Southeast Asia have also achieved certification in the program.
I wanted to give a special thank you to Patty Price, Janice Laskoski, Sherry Schwartzbach and MJ Murphy for organizing the WGL Invitational. They did a fantastic job! Good job ladies!
The Club’s Annual Meeting is Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 5:00pm here at the Club. By now, Voting Members should have received their Annual Meeting Agenda and Voting Ballots. There are only two business items on the Annual Meeting Agenda this year – election of three new Directors and approval of the revised and restated Bylaws.
In May of this year I presented the Club’s critical goals (below):
- Reduce the Equity Golf Members re-sale list
- Grow the membership base in each category to achieve a full membership roster
- Increase the club’s cash reserves
- Obtain the necessary funds to preserve the exiting assets
- Update the Club’s written bylaws, policies and membership documents
The Equity Golf Membership resale list was at a high of 82 resigned Members. I estimate we will have reduced the resale list to about 30 by the end of January 2011. We have done a good job selling Athletic Club Memberships, but have not filled our Golf Membership roster. It will take all of our efforts to recruit more Golf Members to help us achieve our cash reserve goal. We still need your Member referrals! We have managed to establish a cash reserve account and to date we have $50,000 in the bank. We have completed most of the Board approved capital improvements, but as our facilities age, we still have other repair and maintenance items to fix. With the approval of the Bylaws at the Annual Meeting we will have new Bylaws as well as revised policies and membership documents in place that will allow the Board the flexibility to adopt policies based on market and business dynamics.

Our 3.5 ladies donned pink tiaras for the "Tennis and Tiara's" Round Robin held recently at our club. We had great food, wine, and enjoyed camaraderie all while playing great tennis! Who says you can't multi-task? There was a three-way tie between Theresa Martinez, Kim Cooper and Nancy Kennedy for first place. We intend to make this a traditional event for women of all levels.
The future of Round Robins looks great; we will hold our second annual US Open Round Robins the weekend of Sept 11th and 12th for men and women. If you didn't attend last year, you must try to attend this year. Mark your calendars now! On November 20th, we are planning to hold our annual Turkey Round Robin in a mixed doubles format. Watch your email blast for more information on these events.

Mark your calendars for September 23, 2010 for the “Swinging for SCRAPPI" golf and tennis tournament to be held at Fountaingrove again year. Last year’s sold-out event was a golf tournament event for men and women. This year’s fundraiser will include a women’s tennis tournament!
SCRAPPI (Sonoma County Cancer Risk Assessment Project) has helped over 1,700 women in our community with breast and ovarian cancer awareness, early detection, genetic testing and emotional and education services. These services provided by SCRAPPI are free of charge, due in large part by a grant from North Bay Cancer Alliance and from our fundraiser supported by you. Funds raised from “Swinging for SCRAPPI” will continue this vital community service for women in Sonoma County.
WHO: First 40 women to sign up, non members are welcome WHEN: Thursday, September 23, 2010 WHERE: Fountaingrove Golf and Athletic Club COST: $100.00 includes continental breakfast, wine country luncheon and auction

Our Annual WGL Captain’s Tournament took place on July 29th. Congratulations to the team of Sandy Kelly, Audrey Sager, Tammy Saal, and Bonnie Mackay who won by eight strokes shooting a two net best ball total of 118. The Annual Men’s Club Fountaingrave Tournament took place on July 31st. Conditions were extremely challenging as players competed from the Black Tees with very difficult pin locations. Randy Cozad, Jesse Bedi, and James O’Neal won low gross in their respective flights while Tom Parker, Robert Cullen, and Dan Lightfoot were crowned low net champions in their individual flights.
The Annual WGL Ladies Invitational took place on August 5th-7th. Patty Price and her team put on a great show featuring a Bon Voyage theme. Thursday’s Welcome Reception was accompanied with great food, music, wine tasting, massages, bocce ball, croquet, and cruise ship bingo. Friday hosted breakfast, 18 holes of golf, lunch, and boutique shopping from local vendors. Saturday began with breakfast followed by 18 holes of golf and an Awards Luncheon featuring tasty cuisine from Chef Karl. Results are included at the end of this letter. We would like to thank everyone that organized, sponsored, and participated in this great event and congratulations to our winners!
There were two more aces since our last Fountainpen. Barry Bialkoski aced our 5th hole on July 21st and Dick Osmun had a hole in one on August 4th. Both aces took place during Wednesday’s Men’s Club. Congratulations gentlemen on this exceptional accomplishment! The 2010 Ladies North Bay Team Play concluded last month and team Fountaingrove came in 1st place gross. They will advance to the Regional Championship Tournament for team play on October 13th at Laguna Seca Golf Ranch. Congratulations and good luck!
We would like to remind everyone to check in the Golf Shop before going out to play and that Fountaingrove’s pace of play expectations are to finish within 4 ½ hours or better. Players should be aware of their surroundings and make sure they are not distracting other groups on the golf course. This is especially important if a player is driving out to an open hole. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation regarding these matters.
Men’s Club Guest Day is scheduled for September 1st and WGL Guest Day will take place on September 2nd. Fountaingrove’s Annual Labor Day Tournament will take place on September 6th and our Annual Super Seniors, Seniors, Juniors, and WGL Club Championship will take place on September 11th-12th. The Home and The Range Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, September 17th which will help raise funds for making significant improvements to our Practice Facility. The 2010 Scrappi Golf Tournament will be held at Fountaingrove on Thursday, September 23rd. Tee times will be available to non tournament participants after 2 p.m. and the practice facility will open at 9:30 a.m. The month of September concludes with Fountaingrove’s Annual Couples Invitational which will take place on September 26th and our fall aerification is scheduled for September 27th-28th. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for any of our upcoming events, please contact the Golf Shop at 707-521-3214.

A Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary
As many of you know, the Golf Course Maintenance Department has been focusing a great deal of energy and time in the direction of sound environmental practices. As a result of all our work and belief in a healthy environment, we undertook the long process of applying to become designated as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Audubon International has an extensive list of criteria that a site must meet in order to become certified by Audubon.
The Audubon criteria includes:
- Outreach and Education, Wildlife and Habitat management
- Chemical use Reduction and Safety
- Water Quality Management, Water Conservation
- Environmental Planning and Construction
We have worked very hard to demonstrate that economic and environmental concerns can work hand in hand. It was our goal to prove that the Golf Course is protecting the ecological integrity of the community’s environment and aquatic ecosystems.

I am so pleased to tell everyone that after meeting all the criteria, FGAC has achieved certification and is the 57th certified site in California and only the 758th in the World! We can now call ourselves a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. We have been commended for all of the projects that we have undertaken to enhance wildlife habitat by instituting sensitive maintenance practices and working to inform the community of our commitment to environmental quality.
At this point, many thank-you’s are in order. I would especially like to thank some of our membership who held meetings and helped educate the staff and membership. In particular:
- Mr. Bill Carle, who set the seed of sound environmental planning
- Greg Hoover, who approved the cost to get started with Audubon International
- Leni Kearns, Fran Webber, and everyone on the Greens Committee for working tirelessly on all the paperwork required by Audubon
- David Sheldon, my assistant, and my entire staff for working together on the Audubon’s criteria.
And, without question, I need to thank John Reyhons CCM, for keeping the continuity of support for the program.
Thanks to everyone at Fountaingrove for yet more success here at our Club!
Enjoy your golf course and happy golfing!

Cart & Golf Course Safety
The golf season is here, and so the course and paths are getting busier. Be sure to slow down and pay attention on the golf course to avoid any accidents. Earlier this season, four carts were damaged. Also, the warmer weather is here, please be aware of your surrounding while on the course, otherwise a rattle snake might surprise you.
All passenger and drivers of golf carts need to make sure to keep all hands and feet inside the cart at all times. The maximum capacity of the golf cart is two people and two golf bags, over capacity will damage carts and might cause unwanted accidents and injuries.
Be sure to supervise your children at all times.
When using the driving range, please be sure to stay within your own hitting station to prevent hitting other golfers nearby.

I have often been asked my secret to keeping my training clients active and consistent in their work-out routine. Many people assume that it must be because I am constantly hounding my clients to continue their workouts. Actually the opposite is true. My philosophy is that people will be consistent when they are training for something. I call this style “training for a purpose”.
Most people exercise to lose weight or get in shape. This can work, but as people plateau, and the weight loss stops they get discouraged and often quit. Weight loss and maintaining an ideal body is important for everyone’s health. To lose weight or maintain an ideal body composition is not dependant on exercise. Weight loss is mostly nutritional. It is way more effective to decrease the caloric intake by 300 per day then it is to burn 300 calories exercising.
So then what do I mean by a purpose? I have had the pleasure over the years to work with many people who were training for a purpose. Many of them came to me with a specific purpose in mind, whether it was a competitive sport, a marathon, an event or even a vacation. An example would be a person who wants to get back playing tennis, cycling or running or improving performance of something he /she likes like golf. This has two positive effects now his or her workout has meaning and by improving performance there is a feeling of accomplishment. Often the results are noticed not by a scale but by winning or getting a personal best.
No matter what the sport or physical challenge there is a work out to improve performance. I have worked with golfers, scuba divers, mountaineers, sailors, and all athletes. The next time you think about exercising, “Ask yourself why you are doing this.” If your work out is getting stale and your focus is starting to lapse set up an appointment with a trainer and say you would like to train for something specific.

From the Trainers’ Corner Angela Henderson, BSC
Training and Eating… Work with Purpose The press often headlines “Low-carb diet trumps low-fat on ‘good’ cholesterol” (yahoo.com 8/5/10), or “Choosing Foods to Help You Sleep Better” (nutrition.about.com). Every week it seems new research tells us to make different food choices. As most of you know, I run the Fountaingrove Weight Loss Challenge with Chris Thompson. The success of our program depends upon whether the participants set appropriate goals (see 7/2010 Fountain Pen), and if they follow the nutrition plan.
Choose your goal. Train toward a goal. We all know someone that has been working out for months or years without results. Your goal can be activity based (I will be able to do 50 push ups in 10 weeks from today), event focused (I will participate in and complete a 10k run before Labor Day). The idea is to set a goal that will be measurable and attainable by some sort of finite event or date. It is easy to see whether or not you have achieved it or not. If you have achieved your goal, GREAT! Now set another one to keep you going. If not, figure out where you got off track and learn from that. When the same issue comes up another time, you will be prepared to deal with it. Now set a new goal. If you struggle repeatedly, seek the help of a professional for program design and track your progress. Never give up!
More than half of your success… In weight loss/body composition is dependent upon how, when, and what you eat and drink. Fuel your body with healthy food. Drink half of your body weight (in ounces) in non-caffeinated, non-alcoholic beverages daily. Eat small meals often, every 2-3 hours. As far as what to eat, there are many dependent factors, such as genetic background, preferences, culture, etc. Test different combinations of carbs, fats, and proteins to see what works best for you. This part of our nutrition program in the WLC, and our upcoming Warrior Team, helps our clients figure out which foods fuel them well and give them energy. As a friend of mine says, “eat more of what makes you feel good, and less of what makes you feel bad”. Simple!
Any more questions, please feel free to contact me at girljock13@yahoo.com Our next upcoming programs are the Warrior Team and Weight Loss Challenge, both beginning in September!

We all know how great our Club is. Whether we work here, golf here, work out here or dine here, all of us know that Fountaingrove boasts a spectacular course, state of the art athletic facilities, gorgeous views, wonderful service and award winning cuisine. There is no better place to hold a special event in all of Sonoma County…But because we are a private club, and because we are a bit off of the beaten path, potential special event clients may not know about us. And that is why we need you, our members, to be ambassadors for Fountaingrove in the community and to your colleagues and friends who might be looking to host a special event. Events that have a Fountaingrove sponsor receive great discounts on the facility rental fee, and Chef Karl will create a custom menu to suit any budget or vision. Remember, there is no greater compliment we can receive here at the Club than the recommendation of our facilities to our members’ family and friends. If you know someone who is planning a special event, refer them to the Club!
For Fountaingrove Members, September is a month full of wonderful activities. Starting us off is Labor Day on Monday, September 6th and it’s going to be a great one! Enjoy an Italian-themed affair poolside at the Athletic Club complete with a festive buffet, music, drink specials and more! Chef Karl’s Steak Cookouts in Bogeys certainly are popular and we are continuing the trend into September. Enjoy steak by the ounce cooked “your way” with salad, potatoes and corn. See the advertisements for both events in this month’s issue of the Fountain Pen for more information!
